What is Dragon Boat Festival?
Dragon Boat Festival is one of 4 main traditional festivals in China. And the date is lunar May 5th. It is a festival that involves ancestor worship, praying, celebration and eating.
Why Chinese people celebrate Dragon Boat Festival
In fact, there are many statements about the resource of Dragon Boat Festival. The first one state it is to memorize a famous poet, Quyuan. While the second one think that it’s to sacrifice the dragon totem. Because Chinese people believe they are the descendants of the dragon.
What people do during the festival?
When the Dragon Boat Festival comes, there will be various activities. While the most important are making Zongzi, burning the wormwood and loong boat race. Zongzi is a traditional tribute for sacrifice. When the festival comes, people will make Zongzi to eat. Besides, people will throw some to the river. Because people think there will be loong there. So they throw some food to the river hoping the loong don’t hurt them.
In the festival, people will hang wormwood on the door. Because people think it can drive the evil away. In the south part of China, there is an important activity, that is the dragon boat race. In south China, even each country has a dragon boat. In the normal time, people will sink the boat into the river. But when the Dragon Boat Festival comes, they will take the boat out and repaint it. In south China, most of the towns will held dragon boat race.
In the race, each boat has about 20 people. Through the team work, they run fast and turn the direction smoothly. With the festival develops, the dragon boat race is not only an activity, but a spirit. It’s the symbol of facing the difficulty and conquer them. The name of the festival also comes from the dragon boat race.
